Ojeikere's portrait
J.D. 'Okhai Ojeikere was born in 1930, in Ovbiomu-Emai in south-western Nigeria. At the age of twenty, he bought himself a modest Brownie camera on the advice of a neighbour who taught him the rudiments of photography. In 1951, he regularly wrote the same letter to the Ministry of Information and two years later, his persistence gained him a job as a darkroom assistant.
In 1961, he became a studio photographer for the first African television station.
Since 1967, he has been a member of the Nigeria Art Council, which organizes festivals of visual and living arts. During a festival in 1968, he took his first photographs devoted to Nigerian culture with his 6 x 6 cm Rolleiflex, always in black and white. From then on, for a period of thirty years now, he has travelled throughout the country in pursuit of his subjects, which are organized by theme. Consisting of almost a thousand shots, Hairstyles is his most rigorous and the most considerable series.
Here are some of his pictures!
